Wiigwaasikaa was established on CPT grounds July 2, 2020. The Minisnook have been holding space, harvesting and foraging, performing ceremony, educating the public and keeping the space safe from those with bad intentions.
We at Children's Peace Theatre are in good communication with our friends at the Wiigwaasikaa and respect and support their message and visions.
Wiigwaasikaa in Aanishnaabemowin means "There are many birch trees".
Many of us are familiar with the oppressiveness of the colonial systems here on Turtle Island (also known as the America's) and abroad. A system which always lead to the genocide of the Indigenous population and the exploitation of land and resources.
Most of Tkaronto (also known as Toronto) is part of the treaty which is known as the Toronto Purchase. The lands in which Children's Peace Theatre is located IS NOT within this treaty. Children's Peace Theatre resides on stolen land. Our location at 305 Dawes Road and everything east to Pickering and as far north as Aurora is apart of what is known as the Rouge Tract Land Claim. This Land Claim was submitted in 2015 by the Mississaugas of The Credit First Nation who are also building good relations with Wiigwaasikaa.
Children's Peace Theatre and Wiigwaasikaa are not affiliated in any way but both parties are cohabitating and communicating honestly and respectfully.
We kindly ask that anyone visiting Children's Peace Theatre please reach out to us so we can also communicate with the Minisnook of Wiigwaasikaa in order to keep everyone aware and safe :)
Please check out their facebook page for more updates! Wiigwaasikaa
If you have any questions feel free to reach out :)
