About UBUNTU ...

The Ubuntu Community Collective (UCC) is an emerging non-profit grassroots organization on the shared platform at the Children’s Peace Theatre focused on serving women and children of the African diaspora. Ubuntu curates a creative and healing space for African diasporic single mothers and their children to come together for rejuvenation in a supportive, non-judgmental and holistic community vibe. Ubuntu is committed to addressing the health, social, financial, cultural, and political realities of African diasporic single mothers through an anti-oppression, trauma-informed, anti-colonial, healing-centered lens.

The Ubuntu Community Collective is based on a flourishing community where all mothers of the African diaspora are thriving. *Ubuntu is a traditional African concept that describes the interconnectedness of humanity – I am because we are. Our sense of self is shaped by our relationship with others.  Empathy and compassion shape our interactions. Ubuntu fosters healing and growth. Ubuntu builds resilient communities.

Ubuntu intentionally curate safe, creative, and healing spaces that support the mental health and wellness of Black solo mothers and their children in Toronto through various activities, programs, and events. They strive to help women find sisterhood in motherhood. For Ubuntu, this means building skills, enhancing wellness, and cultivating a network of women-led families to provide peer support.

What Ubuntu has been up to ...

This past year we’re grateful that Ubuntu was able to pivot and offer a variety of programs in person and as well as a few virtually. Some of the great initiatives Ubuntu has cultivated are:

Creative Healing Workshop: A virtual seven sessions workshop focused on providing Black solo mothers the ability to explore creative and transformative activities in a safe and supportive community space.
Follow Ubuntu closely on Instagram as we love to share some behind the scenes:

Skate Create Meditate: a monthly holistic program for BIPOC families (children AND parents/guardians/caregivers) that combines skateboarding, art, and mindfulness.

Community Farming: Ubuntu runs a community farm at Downsview Park (Toronto) and Adinkra Farm (near Barrie) where they provide support to grow food and strengthen intergenerational family bonds. Ubuntu hosts farm days to learn, farm, and connect on the land, and most importantly have fun as they educate families about sustainable, regenerative farming methods.
