So for those of you who are wondering, “What is River Rocks?” We are an Indigenized Hip-Hop GrassRoots Project. Our mission is to ensure Indigenous youth are given an opportunity to create strong cultural and community connections.
We are just kicking off but essentially what we want to do is host practice sessions for youth to express themselves through the Hip-Hop Elements (Break’n, DJ’n, Graffiti & Emceein). We want to build on the foundations of Hip-Hop but also Knowledge of Self. We call this Indigenized Hip-Hop as in Decolonized Hip-Hop, we operate in circles (cyphers).
We cycle through the elements as we cycle through the seasons, we’re all about resisting oppression, not caking off the culture. Times are tough. We gotta be tougher. Knowledge of Self is fundamental to Hip-Hop expression and as we are on Rez, on Six Nations working with Indigenous youth primarily, we seek to also include our own traditional and contemporary “Indigenous” forms of expression within our practice.
We are also 100% in solidarity with Mother Earth so we seek to build bridges with other communities under the common goal of Protecting The Sacred. The Good Mind is our Strongest Weapon so we seek to balance and build on our Physical, Emotional, Mental, Spiritual ways of being.
Check us out and become part of the movement.
