Skwaabeywis. [shqua-bae-wiss]. Ojibwe origin. Noun. Meaning: Flame-Keeper.
One who tends the sacred fire, allowing others access to medicines, healing and deeper connection.

SKWAABEYWIS SEED GRANT

Over the past twelve years, Children's Peace Theatre has been dedicated to providing opportunities for young people to build initiatives that create solutions to challenges that they face. In keeping with our philosophy that we have a collective responsibility to foster and model a culture of peace, and that youth are the instigators of social change, we officially launched our Skwaabeywis Seed Grant Program this year, which provides up to $1500 in micro-grants to support various youth-led creative projects.

The Skwaabeywis Seed Grant funds projects by young people, aged 16 - 29, who are:
  • Artists engaged in community arts
  • Artists working for social change
  • Individuals living & working on the margins

Skwaabeywis [shqua-bae-wiss].
As settlers living on stolen Indigenous land, it is crucial to prioritize rooting our work in an Indigenous worldview framework, in an effort to re-indigenize (de-colonize) the way we take up space here on Turtle Island. In providing this resource, it is our honour and aim to tend the flame for young people and the communities they serve. In doing so, we also pass on this important role with the desire that their projects will create access & transformation in their communities.

We’d like to thank Candace Day Neveau of NiimpkiBenishii Abik (ThunderBird Rock) for gifting us with this name and beautiful metaphor.
