FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: EAST-YORK BASED NOT-FOR-PROFIT COMMUNITY ARTS ORGANIZATION CHILDREN’S PEACE THEATRE TO CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE AND THE LAUNCH OF THEIR YOUTH ARTS SPACE

MEDIA CONTACT: Beck Pura, Communications Manager, 416-752-1550, beck@childrenspeacetheatre.org

Toronto, August 25, 2014 – On Sunday, September 21, 2014 Children’s Peace Theatre will be celebrating International Day of Peace with the launch of their new Youth Arts Space.

The Youth Arts Space (YAS) is in its emergent phase and its main focus is building a solid foundation within the community and developing positive networks for local youth in Toronto.  Children’s Peace Theatre is an award winning organization whose mission is to transform conflict through an arts-based methodology. With support from The Ontario Trillium Foundation, an agency of the Government of Ontario, Children’s Peace theatre is excited for the launch of the YAS as part of their Shared Platform Initiative.  YAS will allow youth living in the Taylor Massey Community to share their love for art, culture and ancestral stories with like-minded individuals in an inclusive space dedicated to community growth.

The United Nations declared September 21, 1981 as the first International Day of Peace.  Since its inception, it has been celebrated across the world through festivals and conventions, and a moment of silence takes place at noon sharp in every time zone to send peace to others with the same vision.

The event at Children’s Peace Theatre will start at noon with a moment of silence, followed by activities led by community artists, a social-profit marketplace, healing circles, artist performances, and a speech from a keynote speaker (TBA).  In addition, Children’s Peace Theatrecommunity partners, funders and supporters will be invited to attend including local government representatives.

The event takes place Sunday, September 21, 2014 between 12 – 9 p.m. at Children’s Peace Theatre, located at 305 Dawes Rd, Toronto, ON M4B 2E2.

Artists Tanisha Taitt and BROWNMAN Direct "White Noise"--A Theatrical Production Focusing on Youth and Media Literacy

For Immediate Release:  Artists Tanisha Taitt and Brownman direct this year’s Children’s Peace Theatre Summer Production White Noise

TORONTO, July 22, 2014--Children’s Peace Theatre is pleased to welcome actor-director-playwright, singer-songwriter, arts educator and activist, Tanisha Taitt back for a second year in a row as director of this year’s Peace Camp Summer Theatrical Production entitled White Noise.

As an artist, Taitt is well known for addressing deep-rooted global issues and has worked with youth at CPT in the past to help uncover and verbalize their ideas on these issues.  “As the Director and a former student of Radio and Television, I am fascinated with finding out how children today relate to media and what role it plays in their lives,” says Tanisha Taitt, Director of White Noise.  “I have no doubt that White Noise will be another conscious and revealing artistic excavation by Children’s Peace Theatre.”

Working alongside Taitt as the Music Director of White Noise is BROWNMAN ALI.  Hailed as “Canada’s preeminent jazz trumpet player”, multiple Juno & National Award winning trumpeter, BROWNMNAN is a very familiar face at Children’s Peace Theatre.  His musical talents drew the attention of CBC, among other notable media with last year’s gala production of Passages and is sure to take the audience by storm with his contributions to White Noise.  Currently touring with rapper Jay-z and Paul Simon, BROWNMAN has taken the month of July off to work at CPT’s Peace Camp, writing the music for the theatrical production and exposing the youth in the program to real-world expertise.  Named by Air Canada as "one of the top 10 reasons to visit Toronto", his outstanding work with youth this summer is yet another to see this year's gala production of White Noise.

On July 26, 2014, Children’s Peace Theatre hosts its annual Peace Gala, celebrating the close of Peace Camp as well as all those who contributed to it.  Peace Camp, a three-week program that takes place every July at Children’s Peace Theatre, brings a number of local professional artists together with youth and junior guides as they work in a collaborative effort with over 40 children aged 8-13 to create an original theatre production complete with a musical score and visual production pieces.  The goal of Peace Camp is for children to explore relevant social issues and express their visions of peace through an arts-based methodology.

White Noise aims to address the function and credibility of today’s media and how it has changed considerably in recent years.  Once a reliable source for news and information, is now an endless stream of corporate fodder where fact mixes dangerously with fiction and is fed to our youth.  The production encourages young people to explore media and the messages that they receive and ask “Whose story is being told” as well as “Whose story isn’t?” and how these messages impact their ideas about the world and as well as their sense of self.

There will be three public performances of White Noise on July 24 (Dress Rehearsal), July 25, and the final Peace Gala on July 26.

Children’s Peace Theatre, an award-winning community arts organization, most recently recognized as a finalist for the 2014 Toronto Arts Foundation Arts for Youth Award, provides programming for under-served children and youth in the Taylor Massey Community.

The work of Children’s Peace Theatre poses questions for young people to explore, examine and question the world they live in—a world that often celebrates acts of violence, yet at the same time produces acts of heart stopping courage, kindness and humility. Peace Camp gives children the opportunity to transform conflict through an arts-based methodology, resulting in some of the best summer theatre Toronto has to offer.

White Noise -- Media Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 11, 2014

CHILDREN’S PEACE THEATRE HOSTS ANNUAL PEACE GALA TO CELEBRATE VISIONS OF PEACE THROUGH THE EYES OF COMMUNITY CHILDREN AND YOUTH.

TORONTO, July 11, 2014—On July 26, 2014, Children’s Peace Theatre hosts its annual Peace Gala, celebrating the close of Peace Camp as well as all those who contributed to it.  Peace Camp, a three-week program that takes place every July at Children’s Peace Theatre, brings a number of local professional artists together with youth and junior guides as they work in a collaborative effort with over 40 children aged 8-13 to create an original theatre production complete with a musical score and visual production pieces.  The goal of Peace Camp is for children to explore relevant social issues and express their visions of peace through arts based methodology.

The theme of this year’s camp, aptly entitled White Noise, focuses on media awareness in an information age and also pays homage to Marshall McLuhan and the 50th anniversary of his book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, which first introduced his famous words “The Medium is the Message.”

“As the Director and a former student of Radio and Television, I am fascinated with finding out how children today relate to media and what role it plays in their lives.”  says Tanisha Taitt, Director of White Noise.  “I have no doubt that White Noise will be another conscious and revealing artistic excavation by Children’s Peace Theatre.”
