Mission
To honour children and young people in the pursuit of peace through
the practice of theatre.
In honouring Children
and young people we believe:
-
Children and young people should be seen and heard. To this end,
we provide theatrical training, performance venues and opportunities
to explore and express feelings and ideas about conflict and peace
on four levels: the personal, the familial, the communal and the
global.
-
It is for the betterment of all when the wellbeing of children
and young people is the primary motivating force behind personal,
political and economic decision making.
-
Children manifest most clearly the human capacity to adapt even
to the harshest conditions. Observing and encouraging children in
the natural process of evolution is an effective first step in bringing
about positive change for our communities, our society and our planet,
particularly as the levels of conflict increase in each.
-
Children and young people of today will play the central role in
establishing a culture of peace in the future.
In the pursuit of Peace
we have:
-
Adopted the United Nations declaration that 2001-2010 be the ÔInternational
Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children
of the World.Õ We recognise the existence of a global movement towards
this goal and seek to build ties with other sectors of global society
to work together defining and creating the new culture of peace.
-
Joined the many who disregard the notion of peace as an inert state
defined by the absence of war, or the result of the avoidance, cessation
or resolution of conflict. We acknowledge conflict to be an essential
part of life and an impetus for productive change and growth. By
engaging in conflict creatively, compassionately and non-violently,
we begin to experience peace. The authentic goal of conflict
is evolution. Non-violent, creative and compassionate engagement
in conflict, we have named Ôconflict evolution.Õ
-
Defined peace as the most demanding activity of the human heart,
mind, body and soul. We recognise we are in the midst of an evolution
in our understanding of ÔpeaceÕ and conflict and the dynamic that
exists between them. The new understanding is being expressed by
the current generation of children.
Through the practice of Theatre
we will:
-
Provide training in drama, dance and music, the forms of communication
best suited to the exploration of conflict and peace in human
relationships. Conflict is at the heart of theatrical expression.
-
Engage children and young people in positive and affirming ways
that enable them to be seen and heard as well as display the common
notion that theatre can be a healing art. As such, it can address
real personal and social ills and contribute to their alleviation.
Theatre creates, addresses and encourages healthy community.
-
Develop presentations based on stories from the lives of the
participants. Theatre, like peace, is an act of creation. By working
theatrically, we provide children and young people with the opportunity
to experience peace by creating peace.
Children
are peacemakers. Peace is Possible. Theatre is powerful.
